Introduction
Developed in 1950 by Julian Rotter and Rafferty, RISB or Rotter Incomplete Sentence Blank is a projective Psychological test.
Description:
· It has different versions such as School Form, College form and Adult form.
· It consists of total 40 incomplete sentences.
· It should be done as soon as possible but the average time taken is 20 minutes.
· Measure of overall index of adjustment
· It is used for screening, group comparison and research purposes
· It can be taken in individual and group settings
· It does not have a long set of instructions
Objectives:
· It is used for screen and experimental purposes.
· It can be used to obtain information of a specific diagnostic value for treatment
Use:
· It is used for general interpretation with a vast range of subjects
· Its overall adjustment score can be used for screening purposes
· It can be used in experimental studies
· It can be used in vocational guidance center
· It is used to investigate the relationships of adjustment to different variables
Reliability:
· Split-half reliability:
· .84 – based on records of 124 male college students
· .83 – based on 71 female college students
· Inter-scorer reliability:
· .91 – male records
· .96 – female records
Validity:
· The test was validated on groups of subjects which did not contain any of cases used in originating the scoring principles and the scoring manual
· Scoring of the test was done “blindly.”
Administration:
· “Complete the following sentences to convey your actual feelings. Try to attempt all of them. Make sure that you make a complete sentence.
· There are no further instructions except if necessary and to encourage the subject to complete all of the items.
· It can be administrated to group.
· Average time for the administration of this test is twenty minutes.
Scoring: Use of Scoring Manual:
For scoring, each sentence is assigned a numerical weight from 0 to 6 and then the weight is summed up to get the overall score of the subject.
Advantages of RISB:
· This test has freedom of response.
· The purpose of test has a disguise.
· It can be administered in groups.
· There is no special training required for the administration of this test. Its interpretation depends on clinical experience.
· It can become part of a clinical interview.
· Its method is flexible so it can develop a special purpose as well.
Disadvantages of RISB:
· It requires knowledge and general skill of personality analysis for interpretation and clinical appraisal. And it cannot be machine scored.
· When the subject is illiterate, disturbed or uncooperative, the material obtained might be insufficient.
· The response style of the subject plays an important role in its scoring.
· The interpretation of this test can be very time-consuming
· A literate client is required for this test.
